Arriving at Jeddah Airport — What UK Pilgrims Need to Know

King Abdulaziz International Airport (IATA: JED) is the main gateway for Umrah pilgrims. Understanding the terminal layout before you arrive removes a major source of anxiety for first-time pilgrims.

Hajj Terminal (Terminal 1)

The dedicated Hajj Terminal is a purpose-built facility used exclusively during Hajj season and for many Umrah charter flights. It is a standalone open-air terminal approximately 1 km from the main terminals. Most UK Umrah charter flights (e.g. Saudi Airlines, Flynas charters) land here. The terminal has its own immigration, baggage reclaim, and exit gates. Our drivers wait at the designated meeting point outside Gate A/B with name boards clearly visible.

North Terminal (Terminal 2)

The main North Terminal handles scheduled airline flights including British Airways, Virgin, Saudia scheduled services, and most low-cost carriers. Modern, air-conditioned, with clear signage in English and Arabic. Our driver meets you in the arrivals hall after you clear customs, holding a name board with your name and the Cheapest Umrah Packages logo. The drive to Makkah takes approximately 60–75 minutes via the Makkah Expressway (Route 40).

Driver & Meeting Point Details

You will receive your driver's name, mobile number, and vehicle registration 48 hours before your flight. Your driver monitors your flight in real time and adjusts if delayed. He will wait up to 90 minutes from landing at no extra charge. If you cannot find your driver, WhatsApp us immediately — our UK team is available 24/7 during your travel days.

First-Timer Tip — After Clearing Immigration

After collecting your bags and exiting customs, do not approach any unmarked taxi drivers who approach you at the airport. Unlicensed taxis at Jeddah Airport are a known issue. Only proceed to the official meeting zone outside the terminal building where your pre-booked driver will be waiting. If in any doubt, call the driver number we have sent you — do not negotiate with strangers.

Private Taxi vs. Haramain High-Speed Railway — Which is Right for You?

The intercity journey between Makkah and Madinah (~450 km) can be made by private transfer or the Haramain High-Speed Railway (HHR). Both have merits depending on your group size, schedule, and luggage. Here is our honest consultancy advice.

Private Transfer (Our Service)

  • ✅ Door-to-door: hotel pickup to hotel drop
  • ✅ No luggage restrictions — bring as much as you need
  • ✅ Travel at your preferred time — no fixed timetable
  • ✅ Ideal for families, elderly, or groups with disabilities
  • ✅ Comfort stop included on request
  • ✅ Driver waits if you are running late
  • ✅ Children/infants accommodated easily
  • ⚠️ Journey time: ~4.5 hours (road via expressway)
  • ⚠️ Costs more per person for solo travellers vs. shared rail
Book Private Transfer

Haramain High-Speed Railway (HHR)

  • ✅ Fastest option: ~2 hours Makkah → Madinah
  • ✅ Very affordable — Economy class from SAR 90 (~£20)
  • ✅ Modern, comfortable trains with A/C
  • ✅ Stops: Makkah → KAEC → Jeddah → Madinah
  • ⚠️ Luggage: strict 23 kg baggage limit per person
  • ⚠️ Terminal transfers needed at both ends (not door-to-door)
  • ⚠️ Tickets can sell out fast — must book in advance online
  • ⚠️ Not suitable for large luggage or those with mobility needs
  • ⚠️ We do not sell HHR tickets directly (book via hhr.com.sa)
Visit HHR Website

Our recommendation: For groups of 4 or more, or families with children/elderly relatives, the private transfer is almost always better value and far more convenient. For solo travellers or couples travelling light, the HHR is excellent. We are happy to advise which suits your specific itinerary — WhatsApp us for a free consultation.

Ziyarat Tours — Sacred Sites of Makkah & Madinah

Visiting the sacred historical sites beyond the two holy mosques is a deeply enriching part of the Umrah journey. Our Ziyarat tours are conducted in private vehicles with knowledgeable drivers who explain the significance of each site.

Makkah Sacred Sites Ziyarat

Half-day tour from your Makkah hotel

Jabal al-Nour (Cave of Hira)

The mountain where the first revelation of the Quran was received by the Prophet ﷺ. Located approximately 4 km from Masjid al-Haram. Our driver drops and awaits at the base; the climb takes 20–30 minutes.

Jabal Thawr

The cave where the Prophet ﷺ and Sayyidna Abu Bakr (RA) took refuge during the Hijra (migration to Madinah). A sacred and historically significant site for every Muslim pilgrim.

Mina

The tent city where Hajj pilgrims stay during the days of Hajj. Located 8 km from Makkah. During Umrah visits, pilgrims can see the vast infrastructure and reflect on the Hajj experience.

Arafat (Jabal al-Rahmah)

The Plain of Arafat, where the Prophet ﷺ delivered his Farewell Sermon. Jabal al-Rahmah (Mount of Mercy) stands at its centre. Standing here, even outside Hajj season, is profoundly moving.

Muzdalifah

The open plain between Mina and Arafat where pilgrims spend the night of Hajj. Visiting outside Hajj provides context and spiritual connection for those planning future Hajj.

Museum of the Two Holy Mosques

A fascinating museum documenting the construction history of Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Nabawi. Displays original keys, architectural models, and historical artefacts.

Half-day tour from your Madinah hotel

Masjid Quba

The first mosque ever built in Islam, constructed by the Prophet ﷺ immediately upon arriving in Madinah after the Hijra. Performing two rak'at of prayer here equals the reward of one Umrah according to Hadith.

Masjid al-Qiblatayn

The mosque where the Qibla (direction of prayer) was changed from Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem to Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, as recorded in Surah al-Baqarah. A unique historical site with deep significance.

Mount Uhud & The Martyrs

The site of the Battle of Uhud (625 CE). The blessed graves of the 70 companions of the Prophet ﷺ who were martyred here, including Sayyidna Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), are located at the foot of the mountain.

Jannat ul-Baqi

The main Islamic cemetery of Madinah, located beside Masjid al-Nabawi. Many family members, companions, and wives of the Prophet ﷺ are buried here. Visiting Jannat ul-Baqi is a Sunnah practice during Ziyarat.

Masjid al-Ghamamah

Located near Masjid al-Nabawi, this mosque marks the site where the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have led Eid prayers and where he prayed for rain (Salat ul-Istisqa).

Al-Masjid al-Sab'a (Seven Mosques)

A cluster of small historical mosques near the site of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq, 627 CE), including Masjid al-Fath. Each mosque is associated with a specific Companion or event from early Islamic history.
